Shaun Paul Dowse is Voltergeist who has released his album "Burnt & Buried" on Bad Sekta record label. He notes that he spent a lot of time in the studio when his grandfather died at the end of last year. Shaun wanted to try and forge his own style a bit more, so he ended up leaning even heavier on dub, traditional folklore (especially Jamaican), and acid sounds.
He found some old Calypso and mento records and used some sounds from those as textures and loops. Shaun also wanted the EP to sound kinda "piratey" as it's perhaps the most romantic of all childhood fantasies. He notes that there is even a sample from a Jamaican Jerk Sauce specialist giving a taste demonstration. Spicy food is the best designer drug!
The final track contains treated samples from The Adventures Of Portland Bill!
Regarding the artwork, there are nautical compasses and an old John Speed map of Jamaica blended into the background, and a nice trippy close up of a Black Witch moth blended into the tracklist page of the inlay. There's also a silhouette of a Black Witch moth on the front cover, covering the St. Thomas Parish of the Jamaica map (where the Morant Bay Slave Rebellion occured back in 1865).
In Jamaican folklore, the Black Witch moth is known as a "Duppy Bat". It is said to be an embodiment of a lost soul, or a soul not at rest. The Jamaican National Heroes George William Gordon and Paul Bogle were hanged at Morant Bay by the British authorities for their part in the rallying of the slave workers, who set fire to the Court House and the nearby buildings in anger. They were buried in a shallow grave behind the Court House.
Still relatively unknown, and about to play a bunch of gigs around the UK at the end of the year. Hoping that when the FIX: The Ministry Movie soundtrack comes out, that should give a wee boost!
Shaun used to record under the name "Emotiquon", remixing artists such as Heaven 17, Enter Shikari, Dot Allison etc. The Voltergeist sound is definitely a much more personal and mature vibe. These tracks are constantly developing, and heading towards a much more industrial acid dub vibe at the moment. All with a good dose of humour of course!
