Naomi - How Many Loves

naomi

Aquarium Naomi is the duo of Bernd Lechler and Nico Tobias who write in a uniquely European (almost specifically German) style of electronic pop. The sound of their third full-length album "Aquarium" is something of a hybrid of the acoustic pop style of the 80s, synthpop of the 90s, and alternative pop of the 2Ks.

Naomi's vocal melodies are melancholically anthemic while the music is sparsely arranged with minimal, but brightly played accents.

Holding up all the playful strumming, hooky melodies, and pulp-poetry lyrics are programmed breakbeats and very minimal synth keys. Throughout this album, Naomi have chosen to focus on strictly played instrumentation, making layers from harmonies instead of string-laden backdrops or slowly unfolding synth pads. The synthesizers they have used are those best suited to stoccatto playing and that's exactly how the use them. At times they make me draw comparisons where Kraftwerk are sharing a studio with Radiohead, but not all the time. "Needle On The Record" however, sounds more like early 90s Duran Duran meets Icehouse (think "Hey Little Girl"). It may be ironic, considering the heavy importance of the lyrics in Naomi's music, but one of the highest recommended songs on Aquarium (from this reviewers perspective) is the instrumental "Sorry Mister Please", although "Here" comes in as a very close second.

Definitely recommended for fans of electronically infected, melancholy alternative pop.
